UNC Wilmington Ultimate Club Teams Compete in National College Championships May 28-31

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Ultimate Frisbee men's and women's clubs competed for a national title at the 2010 USA Ultimate College Championships May 28-31 in Madison, Wis. USA Ultimate is the national governing body for the sport of Ultimate in the United States.

More than 200 women's teams compete in the Ultimate leagues. UNCW has had a Club Ultimate team since 1988. The UNCW women's team, the Seaweed, went into the tournament play ranked sixth in the nation. They defeated UNC Chapel Hill's team at the Atlantic Coast College Open Regionals May 8-9 to advance to nationals. The win marks the second time in two years that the women's team has won the regional tournament on its way to national competition. The men's team, the Seamen, finished second in regional competition behind the University of Florida. As the runner-up, they went on to compete in Wisconsin.

Both the men's and women's teams have track records of tournament success. The UNCW women were Atlantic Coast Regional Champs and N.C. Sectional Champs in 2010. The men's team is ranked 19th in the nation and was the N.C. Sectional Champ in 2009 and Atlantic Coast Regional Runner-Up in 2010.

New UNCW Alumni

The 79th commencement exercises for UNCW took place on May 7-8 in Trask Coliseum.  An estimated 1,695 undergraduate and 265 graduate students received degrees and joined the already 53,000 proud Seahawk Alumni.

New UNCW graduates have taken advantage of the UNCW Career Services Office while preparing for internships, writing resumes, searching for jobs, and interviewing with potential employers.  The Career Services Office is a comprehensive career counseling and resource center dedicated to empowering students and alumni as active participants in their own career development. Through career exploration and experiential opportunities, students are motivated to expand their knowledge of themselves and the world of work in a dynamic global community.

Our newest UNCW alumni report that after graduation 80% have either entered a graduate program or found employment within five months.  We encourage you to read about some of these students who have been highlighted for their accomplishments upon graduation.

UNCW Clock Tower History

Ten years ago, current Assistant Director of UNCW Presents and part-time faculty member Shane Fernando, as class president, led the campaign to raise funds for a 50-foot clock tower for the center of campus. Students, alumni, staff, faculty, the university and community members and businesses contributed to make this monumental task a reality; it remains the largest student organized gift project in the UNC-system.


The UNCW Millennium Clock Tower was dedicated and sounded for the first time at the senior celebration on May 12, 2000. The university's alma mater plays on the carillon each day at noon and 5 p.m. and the Westminster chimes toll on the hour. Today, the clock tower is a significant part of important institutional events such as the annual Trask Trek during freshman convocation and memorial programs of all sorts.

UNCW orientation is an exciting time for our new students and families. You will learn what you need to know to make a successful academic and personal adjustment to UNCW. Class registration, placement testing, and information about services provided to students are integral parts of learning about a new place and a new experience. Orientation is also a time for you to become more familiar with the campus and what we have to offer.   You will also meet some of your future classmates, friends, and faculty. Additionally, an orientation leader will assist you in finding your way around campus and meeting new people.

First Year Housing Options

Are you an accepted student still looking for the perfect place to live next year at UNCW?  Take a look at the UNCW Housing and Residence Life Website.  There are floor plans and pictures of all of the residence hall that are currently available for incoming freshmen. 

Today, there are 45 residential buildings that include traditional residence halls, residence suites, and apartments. Collectively, these buildings house over 4,100 students representing nearly 40% of the undergraduate population. Although UNCW does not require any students to live on campus, almost 95% of UNCW freshmen choose to stay on campus their first year.

AP Credit by Examination

An entering freshman may receive semester hour credits based on Advanced Placement Examination. These examinations are taken prior to the student's high school graduation. Information on this examination program may be obtained from the high school counselor. High school students who take Advanced Placement Examinations should have test scores sent to the University of North Carolina Wilmington Registrar's Office for placement and credit evaluation.  Please head to the UNCW Registrar's website for more information on what scores correlate to the UNCW class. 

UNCW Summer School

For students willing to dive in intellectually, the University of North Carolina offers a perfect environment for learning and living, one that is dynamic, demanding and engaging.

Some advantages which Summer Sessions provide are: the ability to complete a full semester of coursework in a shorter span of time; the opportunity to reduce course load in the upcoming semesters; and a jump start for new students to obtaining a degree.  Students may earn a maximum of eight semester hours of credit per summer session!

Summer Session 1: May 13-June 15, 2010
Summer Session 2: June 23-July 23, 2010

If you are a newly admitted student you can email the UNCW Office of Admissions at admissions@uncw.edu and request that your application be moved to the second Summer Session.  New students must attend Orientation prior to attending classes at UNCW, and Summer Session 2 would be the earliest they can begin at UNCW.
