MTV's "The Buried Life" Comes to UNCW

MTV's hit show "The Buried Life" will be asking students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington "What do you want to do before you die?" On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the Association for Campus Entertainment will host show cast members Ben and Dave in UNC Wilmington's Warwick Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first serve. The presentation will be followed by a short Q&A and a meet and greet for audience members.

UNCW ranked 15th on Kiplinger's "Best Value" list

UNCW has received some exciting news to start the New Year! Kiplinger's has ranked UNC Wilmington 15th in the nation as a "Best Value" among public universities. This is up from 27th in 2011's ranking. Each year Kiplinger's ranks four year institutions "that deliver a stellar education at an affordable price."

"Providing the highest quality academic experience at the lowest possible cost is a consistent goal for UNCW," said Chancellor Gary L. Miller. "Even in the current economic environment, in which we have experienced significant and sustained state budget reductions over a several-year period, we have steadfastly refused to sacrifice quality. We would like to share with you an event that UNCW will be participating in tomorrow, January 12th, 2012. CollegeWeek Live, a company responsible for hosting virtual college fairs and admission events for prospective college students, will be having an event entitled "Paying for College," tomorrow from 12pm-10pm. As you can imagine, this event will contain great information on financial aid and other options parents and students can use to help cover the costs of a college education. Among many other colleges and universities, UNC Wilmington will host live chat hours for prospective students and parents during the event if they wish to chat with a representative to learn more about UNCW and our admission process. Our chat hours are scheduled from 12pm-8pm. We hope you will share this information with your interested students!

Elizabeth Irvin is a Spanish professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Outside of her responsibility as a faculty member, she also serves as the Director of Cuerpo Sano, Mente Sana. The program, which began in 2009, provides healthy foods and education on living a healthy lifestyle on a low-income budget. The program currently serves seven children and their families in the local Wilmington area.

What makes this program unique is that it provides a weekly bag full of nutritious foods and snacks, while teaching the families how to eat healthier while on a limited income. Once a month, Professor Irvin and her group of volunteers conduct a session with the 7 families to discuss the topic of nutrition and exercise. The families leave each session with a homework assignment that will help them become aware of their personal nutrition and how they can make improvements.

Do you have students who are interested in Film Studies? Wilmington, NC has a growing film industry, and is currently listed as the third largest film production center in the country, following closely behind Hollywood and then New York City. This is thanks to EUE Screen Gems Studios, which has its headquarters in Wilmington and has produced many films in our city over the last 60 years, including A Walk to Remember, The Exorcist III, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blue Velvet, and televisions series such as One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek, and the HBO series Eastbound and Down.

The city of Wilmington, however, is about to host perhaps the most well-known and biggest-budget film in state history. In a very competitive bidding process with areas like Los Angeles, Michigan, New Mexico and Canada, EUE Screen Gems Studios and the NC Film office were selected to host Marvel Studios and their latest installment of the Iron Man Franchise- Iron Man 3!

Iron Man 3 is slated to begin production in 2012, using all of Screen Gems stages and facilities and taking residence in Wilmington from January through October of 2012. According to the governor's office, the film will create 550 new jobs and more than 1,000 talent opportunities, as well as $80 million for the local economy.

Wilmington’s Cucalorus Film Festival is back!

Wilmington’s Cucalorus Film Festival is back! The festival is a showcase of independent and international film drawing artists from around the world and film fans from all over the country. Film, art, and community collide at the Cucalorus Film Festival each year drawing over 10,000 attendees and screening over 150 films from around the world. Cucalorus is the region’s premier cultural event, receiving international praise for high quality programming and Southern hospitality. The Brooks Institute named Cucalorus as one of the top ten film festivals in the United States and MovieMaker Magazine dubbed Cucalorus as one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals.

Kenneth Price, UNCW graduate from 2003 will have his documentary “The Wonder Year” featured at this year’s festival. Kenneth Price holds a BA degree in Film Studies from UNCW and an MFA in Film and Video Production from UNCG. Price had early success as an editor on a handful of films like Ben Fancy's The Calming (Cucalorus 2006), Sadie's Waltz (Cucalorus 2007), and Deconfliction (Cucalorus 2007). As a director, Price's short films The Late Mr. Mokun Williams and First Sunrise both screened at Cucalorus. But Price is probably best known as the buttoned down partner with Jonathan Guggenheim and Cory Howard on the feature films Lightning Salad Moving Picture and Americatown, two crafty DIY comedies based on the comedic stylings of the supercomedy, superduo the Superkiiids. More recently, Price has been directing music videos for a variety of hip hop artists including 9th Wonder, Actual Proof, Skyzoo, Rapsody, and The Away Team. The Wonder Year is Price's first documentary feature.

College Planning Timeline ... Senior Year

• Meet with your school counselor to finalize your list of colleges. Be sure your list includes “safety”, “reach” and “target” schools.

• Start a checklist of all application requirements and deadlines.

• If you can demonstrate financial hardship, contact the colleges and your guidance counselor about possible application fee waivers.

October

• Register for the SAT and/or ACT if you want to take them in November or December.

• If you are going to apply Early Action or Early Decision, be very mindful of the deadline.

• Identify who you would like to write you a letter of recommendation and ask them early. Give your recommender a resume as well.

• Write first drafts of your college essays and ask your parents, teachers and peers to review them for you.

November

• Make sure your SAT and/or ACT scores will be sent by the testing agency to each one of your colleges.

• Contact your guidance counselor and provide them with the necessary information so they can send out a high school transcript to the schools you are to applying to.

• Get PIN’s for the FAFSA for both yourself and for your parents

December

• Try to complete all college applications before the winter break.

• Apply for scholarships in time to meet scholarship application deadlines.

• Start gathering documents that you will need to complete the FAFSA.

January

• Submit your FAFSA as soon as you can. The FAFSA form becomes available January 1st of every year.

• If your grades have improved or you have new accomplishments that were not on your original college application, be sure to inform the schools that you have applied to.

February

• Register for AP exams

• Plan your last rounds of college visits and Spring Open House

March/ April

• Admission decisions start arriving. Read everything you receive carefully, as some of the information may be time sensitive.

• Revisit colleges that accepted you if it is hard for your to make a choice.

• Do not get senioritis! Colleges want to see strong grades in the second half of your senior year.

May

• May 1st is the national deadline for high school students to inform colleges on whether or not they plan to attend. If you already know well before this date, let the colleges you do not plan on attending know. You help create space for students that are on the waiting list.

Keep in mind that you do not have to do these steps in the order they are listed. The important thing is that you do them in a timely manner.

• Meet with your school counselor to make sure you are taking courses that will make you eligible as well as competitive for the colleges you are planning to attend.

• Push yourself to get the best grades possible this year. The payoff will be more colleges to choose from and a better chance for merit based scholarships.

• Pick up the Official Student Guide to PSAT/MNSQT from your high school’s guidance office and take the practice test.

• Find out if your school or county will have a college night (college fair).

October

• Attend a college fair.

• Begin looking through college guide books in your guidance counselor’s office. Start a preliminary list of colleges that might interest you.

• Start to learn about financial aid. Use the College Board website to learn how it works, and the financial aid calculator to estimate how much aid you might receive.

November

• Begin to research scholarships

• If you are planning to major in the arts in college (drama, music, fine art) ask your teachers and guidance counselor about requirements for a portfolio or audition.

December

• Spend time over the holiday making a list of what kind of college you want to attend. Big or small? Far away or close to home? Make a list of the college features that are important to you.

College Board & ACT

SAT

You will need to create an account at College Board so you can register for the SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) exams. It is also a great starting point to gather and compare basic data on colleges and universities. Information found on this site includes admission requirements, program offerings, cost and much more.

ACT

Students who are planning to take the ACT surely will need to create an account. The site also offers information about planning for college, selecting a major and the financial aid process. The ACT also has a blog by students, at every level- from freshmen in college to juniors in high school.

College Confidential

This site is an online community of Admission Counselors, parents and students. In addition to helpful articles on admission and financial aid, it features various discussion boards where parents and students post questions and Admission Counselors respond to the questions. All you need to do is register and you can join the conversation.

College Prowler

This website provides college reviews for prospective students from current or recent graduates. For each of the more than 7,000 colleges listed, you can learn about everything from the admission process to student life. In addition, this site offers a ballpark assessment of your chances for admission at the schools you are considering.

Common Application

Almost every high school senior is familiar with the so-called “common app.” Over the years, this has become a go-to resource for students considering applying to a variety of colleges and universities across the nation. Students complete one main application and essay that can be submitted to multiple colleges. Keep in mind that some schools have supplementary materials that are unique to that particular school that you will need to complete.

FAFSA

If you think you will need assistance with paying for college, become familiar with the website of the Free Application for Financial Student Aid. The website is administered by the U.S. Department of Education. It is a user-friendly resource that is loaded with a variety of information on how to finance your college education. Most importantly, this is where you complete an application if you want to be eligible for Pell grants, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans and Parent Plus loans.

FastWeb

If you are hoping for a scholarship, this is a great place to start. After registering, you can custom-search a database of 1.3 million scholarship possibilities based on your own individual qualifications and needs. FastWeb also supplies information on jobs and internship programs, and has an active discussion board as well.

FinAid

FinAid is a website sponsored by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Some financial aid counselors describe this website as the most comprehensive resource about paying for college. You will find detailed information on different types of loans, scholarships, grants and even military programs. In addition, it has calculators to help estimate the cost of college, calculate expected family contribution, estimate how much you need to borrow.

NCAA

Any student athlete who dreams of playing at a Division I, II or III school should log onto this site and download the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s guide. This guide will inform you of the rules and regulations that spell out information such as how college coaches can recruit to what SAT or ACT scores a high school athlete must attain. This is also the place where athlete applicants submit a “clearinghouse form” that is used by college coaches for recruitment purposes.

Peterson’s

Peterson’s is a great website to find a wealth of information in a single place. You will find data about hundreds of colleges and universities, including criteria for admissions, courses of study and total cost. In addition, the website provides helpful articles on virtually every aspect of the admission process.

The Princeton Review

Even though the Princeton Review is focused on encouraging students to sign up for the company’s test prep program, the site contains a large amount of free content, including articles on applying to schools, choosing a major and finding a study abroad program. One unique feature is the “counselor-o-matic” tool that asks questions about grades, test scores and interests and activities, then spits out a list of “good-fit” schools.

UNC Wilmington has been ranked the number 4 public master's university in the South, according to the 2012 U.S.News & World Report rankings for regional universities. This will make the 14th consecutive year UNCW has been in the top 10 on this elite list. The 2012 ranking records the highest regional ranking ever, a one spot jump from last year.

Ten years later, the events that occurred on 9/11 are still fresh in our minds and in our hearts. This week, the UNC Wilmington community came together to remember the nearly 3,000 individuals lost in the tragedies.

The Carnival is back in Seahawk Country

The Involvement Carnival is a chance for UNC Wilmington students (especially freshmen and transfer students) to see what involvement opportunities exist for them on campus and in the Wilmington community. This year’s carnival was held on August 31^st, from 10am – 2pm at Campus Commons.

This annual tradition features UNC Wilmington departments and student organizations, local businesses, religious organizations and community service agencies that come ready with information about getting involved in each of their unique organizations.

Many student organizations rely on the Involvement Carnival as a recruitment opportunity since many students passing by the tables often stop and sign up to receive more information about a group. UNC Wilmington students appreciate learning about the different involvement opportunities, as well as Free Giveaways. This year, 275 different organizations and more than 5,000 students took part in the Involvement Carnival.

We would like to give a big thanks to the Campus Activities and Involvement Center for their hard work in planning and executing this amazing program. A big KUDOS from the Undergraduate Admissions Office for a job well done!!!

SAT or ACT...Which one should I take?

I am sure this is a question that most rising juniors and even some seniors are constantly asking themselves. We, at the UNC Wilmington Undergraduate Admissions Office are happy to finally lay to rest this age-old question troubling high school students across the nation. Our answer is that we recommend taking whichever of the two standardized tests you feel most comfortable taking. Not quite the earth shattering answer you were expecting, huh? The reasoning behind our answer is that the SAT and ACT are structured differently, and therefore how well you do on the SAT or ACT will be based on your own personal areas of strength. The SAT is an aptitude test while the ACT is an achievement test. To begin learning more about the differences between the SAT and ACT, we recommend starting with the Kaplan and Princeton Review websites.

Advice from the UNCW Admission Committee

Take standardized tests at least twice before sending results to colleges. Review all scores and consult with your counselor and college admission offices to discuss the options below for reporting your scores:

• SAT score choice can reduce test-day anxiety by allowing you to choose the SAT scores by test date to send to colleges or universities at no additional cost.

• If you submit all SAT test scores, most universities will select the highest of each section, possibly from different test dates, to create your highest overall score.

• As an alternative to SAT, the ACT with writing exam is offered at various high schools in your area as well as at UNCW. Unlike SAT, admissions offices are unable to choose the highest score from the ACT sub sections from different test dates; they will simply take the highest composite score.

• UNCW encourages SAT score choice. Should your scores fall outside of our average, hold your scores and consider taking the ACT with writing exam. Send in only your highest score from the ACT with writing or submit several SAT scores for us to create your highest overall score.

What we are looking for...

At UNC Wilmington, we accept both the SAT and the ACT. The middle 50% of the current incoming class scored between 1130-1250 on the SAT. Please be mindful that this score only reflects the critical reading and math portions of the test. As for the ACT, we require that students take the ACT with writing. The middle 50% for the ACT composite score is between 23-28 for the current incoming class.

New Students Welcomed with Convocation

Approximately 2,000 freshmen students were welcomed into their academic career at UNCW with the annual Convocation celebration on Aug. 22.

First gathering on the Campus Commons in the shadow of the Clock Tower, the Class of 2015 proceeded from Chancellor's Walk to the Clock Tower for the unveiling of the class banner. Following the Trek To Trask (Coliseum), students were greeted with comments by Provost Cathy Barlow and Chancellor Gary Miller and a full address by John Fischetti, professor in the Watson School of Education. A welcome picnic with faculty and staff followed on the lawn of Hoggard Hall.

Each year more than 1,700 volunteers dressed in teal helped new students move into their residence halls. Thousands of new UNC Wilmington students and parents are met with cheers and helping hands at this long-standing UNCWelcome Move-In tradition. This year UNCW is welcomed approximately 1,990 freshman to their new home for the fall 2011 semester.

Volunteers from the campus and Wilmington community swarm cars as they pull up to help students carry their belongings into their new homes. UNCW has been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education and other prominent publications for the unique nature of its Move-In tradition.

ACT with Writing: Register NOW!

The next available ACT with writing test date will be September 10, 2011. If you are interested in taking the test you must register by August 12, 2011. Please head to the ACT website to register and receive more information about test prep. UNCW requires that all students who submit the ACT take the writing portion. Currently the average ACT with writing composite score is a 25 for the middle 50% of admitted students.

UNCW ECO Teal

UNCW students Chris Bowen (junior) and Catie Manns (senior) partnered together to provide UNCW's ECOteal store with painted bicycles and skateboard decks. The two have added custom details to more than 30 new bicycles ordered by incoming students from the eco-friendly store.

ECOteal is UNCW's environmentally friendly retail store. It was launched in an effort to offer students, faculty and staff a convenient, safe place to purchase transportation-related items, bicycle and skateboard repair services and sustainable products. ECOteal is the first of its kind in the UNC system. For more information please visit their website.

UNCW receives recognition on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

UNCW students and their dedication to helping the community have not gone unrecognized. UNCW was recently recognized again in the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, this year receiving the accolade of "Honor with Distinction!"

"Our faculty and staff purposefully incorporate service learning and community service activities into all aspects of the UNCW learning experience," Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said. "We want our students to become active citizens who care about and contribute to the world they will one day lead."

Last year more than 7,000 students committed to 70,625 hours of community service through volunteer work and service learning, culminating in over $1 million in economic value. UNCW students have helped to place UNCW on this prestigious Honor Roll every year since its inception in 2006.

Seaweed Ultimate Frisbee Team Places Fifth in National Championship

The UNCW Seaweed Women's Ultimate Frisbee team is now ranked fifth in the nation after competing at the USA Ultimate College National Championships in Boulder, Colorado. Seaweed took fifth place among some of the best competitors in the country, such as UNC Chapel Hill and Stanford University.

UNCW R/V Cape Fear helps to raise 3,000-pound anchor from the Queen Anne's Revenge

After a news conference was held just two weeks ago announcing the expedition, officials from the Queen Anne's Revenge Project, in collaboration with UNCW and Cape Fear Community College, celebrated as they raised a 3,000-pound anchor from the site of the famous shipwreck. UNCW's R/V Cape Fear and the CFCC R/V Dan Moore aided in the salvage, providing support for project divers and aiding in the lifting and transport of the artifact.

The recovery of the artifact is a historical occasion, as the anchor is another piece to add to a list of over 250,000 artifacts recovered from the ship. This will not only shed more light on Blackbeard and his infamous legacy but provide a wealth of information on 18th century maritime culture, as well as the culture of piracy.

Congratulations to the staff of the Queen Anne's Revenge Project and the crews of the R/V's Cape Fear and Dan Moore for their success during this historical expedition!

A self-serve frozen yogurt bar with a unique name is boasting success for three recent UNCW graduates. The Fuzzy Peach, with its original location several blocks away from campus, has become so popular among locals that its owners have now opened two other locations in Porters Neck and Downtown Wilmington. A fourth location is on the way in Monkey Junction as well, and they recently began to advertise franchise opportunities on their website!

The Seaweed, Headed to Boulder, CO!

Congratulations are in order for the UNCW's Ultimate Frisbee women's club team. The Seaweed are headed for the USA Ultimate College National Championships in Boulder, CO, May 27-29.

The Seaweed defeated their rival UNC Chapel Hill to win the Atlantic Coast Regional Championships for the third consecutive year in April. This win helped secure their spot in Boulder.

A news conference was held this morning detailing plans for a new expedition to the site of the Queen Anne's Revenge. The ship, once captained by the infamous pirate Blackbeard, ran aground off North Carolina shores near Beaufort in June 1718.

Since the discovery of the Queen Anne's Revenge in 1996, the UNCW R/V Cape Fear and the and the R/V Dan Moore of Cape Fear Community College have worked in a joint partnership with the N.C Department of Cultural Resources on many expeditions to the site. The two research vessels have aided in recovery of tens of thousands of artifacts from the sunken ship, helping to shed light on many aspects of eighteenth-century maritime culture and the culture of piracy.

The news conference, which was held at the UNCW Center for Marine Science, laid plans for the recovery of a large artifact from the ship, possibly a cannon. The conference also provided attendees with information on the types of equipment used during a recovery expedition, and outlined the how individuals from both UNCW and Cape Fear Community College aid in the recovery efforts. The expedition will take place this month from May 23rd-27th.

A record number of UNCW students will graduate and "soar" on to the rest of their lives this weekend at Trask Coliseum. UNCW's Commencement ceremonies begin at 2:00 pm today, with an incredible estimate of 1800 undergraduate students and 285 graduate students receiving degrees in their field of study!

UNCW Names a New Chancellor, Gary Miller

Gary L. Miller, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Wichita State University, has been elected the new chancellor of UNC Wilmington. The Board of Governors held a special meeting on May 3rd to make the announcement with UNC President Tom Ross on the UNCW campus. Miller will assume his new duties no later than July 1, succeeding Rosemary DePaolo, who will be retiring from UNCW after eight years of service.

Westside Hall Renamed to Honor Retiring Chancellor DePaolo

After eight years of service to UNC Wilmington, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo will be retiring on June 30th. During her time at UNCW, Dr. DePaolo has made many lasting impressions that the students, faculty and staff will remember, and our new chancellor will inherit. Some highlights of her tenure include:

Exceeding goals set for student graduation rates, student-faculty ratio, campus diversity, international enrollment and study abroad participation, and research and development grant funding
Building new on-campus student housing increasing the number of students who live on campus to almost 40 percent of the student body

Last week the Board of Trustees of UNCW announced the naming of DePaolo Hall in honor of Chancellor DePaolo. This building is focused on providing student services and it is only fitting that this be named in her honor because of her personal commitment to providing students with the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. This surprise announcement came during a campus gathering to thank Dr. DePaolo for her contributions to the university as the spring semester comes to a close.

One day, THREE conference title wins for Seahawks

This weekend was a historic weekend at UNC Wilmington. For the first time in school history, the men and women won Colonial Athletic Association championships in the same year for golf. A few hours later our men's tennis team also upset the top-seeded VCU Rams to win another CAA Conference title.

The UNCW men's golf team entered the tournament with a to 50 national ranking. This win was their first since 2005 and will now land them a spot in the NCAA Regional next month. The women's golf team entered the tournament a bit behind the men ranked only 117 in the Golfweek rankings, but third in the CAA. This win was unexpected for them, but still well deserved. This was the first women's CAA Conference title since 2008.

A few hours after after the excitement on the golf course, the attention quickly turned to the tennis courts. UNCW's men's tennis team won a dramatic 4-3 victory over Virginia Commonwealth. This victory will send UNCW to the NCAA tournament on May 3.

"Hawk It Out" competition dances on another year

Some very talented UNCW students competed in a student organized dance competition known as "Hawk It Out," last Friday, April 8th. In its 4th year, the annual competition and UNCW tradition was again a wildly successful event. Held in a similar competition format to the TV show "So you think you can dance?," the event showcased some excellent Seahawk talent, as many different dance styles were represented. Nine top finalists competed for a chance at $1,000 worth of prizes!

Surf Team WINS East Coast Championship

UNC Wilmington's nationally-ranked surf team took home the first place title for the third consecutive year at the 2011 National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) East Coast Championships held in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. April 7-10, 2011.

UNCW competed against teams from the University of North Florida, Flagler, Florida Institute of Technology, University of Central Florida, Daytona State College, University of Florida, University of Central Florida, Stetson and Florida State University. The competition was scored by individual surfers who gained points toward the team score as they advanced through each heat. The top three surfers moved forward to the next heat, with first place gaining six points, second place earning five points and third place awarded four points. Five members of the UNCW Surf Team made it to the finals, two short boarders, one long boarder and both female competitors. Long boarder Drake Courie placed first overall in the college long board division.

The team will now travel to Salt Creek, Calif. June 16-18 to compete in the 2011 NSSA National Championships.

A recent statewide competition known as the "Tweets for your Sweet" campaign found its top prizes awarded to three UNCW students! Held by the N.C. Tobacco-Free College Initiative, the competition asked students to submit simple and creative messages via Twitter that they would send to loved ones to help them quit smoking. UNCW held the highest student response rate of all colleges and universities that participated, helping to make an impact in promoting the cessation of smoking among college students.

VISIONS Film Festival and Conference to Showcase Undergraduate Work and Talent

UNC Wilmington is hosting the first-ever Visions Film Festival and Conference on Friday, April 1st. The Festival is the first international film festival to celebrate the work and talent of undergraduate students, and the first festival to be designed by undergraduates as well! Just Juniors will take place on April 8th and again on April 29th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. in the Burney Center Ballroom. We will offer an optional Financial Aid session beginning at 12:30pm before the formal program. The afternoon will consist of the following components: an admissions panel, information sessions on University College and our various Academic Colleges, and a tour of the campus. There will also be an optional tour of one of our residence halls from 3:45 pm until 4:30 pm.

My name is Jessie Baker and I am thrilled to join the UNCW Admissions team! I graduated from UNCW with a BA in Liberal Arts majoring in Communication Studies in 2007. My favorite part of working for UNCW is that I get to relive my wonderful college experience here every day on this beautiful campus! The people are amazing and I love all of the great students I get to work with and meet on a daily basis!

I'm a beach girl that loves everything about Wilmington and for the past few years I have also traveled the world as a photographer. These experiences have given me a great appreciation for the value of the educational opportunities we have in America especially at UNCW! UNCW Club Hockey, Skating to the playoffs!

The UNCW Club Ice Hockey team extended its unbeaten conference season this past weekend with an 8-4 win over Appalachian State. The team plays at the Wilmington Ice House rink surrounded by loyal Seahawks fans. The estimated attendance for games ranges from 200 to 500.

The roster includes players from cold-weather states such as Michigan, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Other players are from North Carolina, but from cities with hockey rinks. The Wilmington area offers the best of both worlds for student-athletes from colder climates. A hockey rink near the beach serves as an interesting draw.

For the first time in team history, the Seahawks (10-0) have qualified for a spot in the ACHA D3 regional tournament. They will travel to Columbia, S.C., to face Alabama in the opening round.

Intercultural Week Events Build Global Perspectives

UNCW's Office of International Programs is hosting the 18th annual Intercultural Week (iWeek), Feb. 7-12. Nearly 20 events throughout the week will celebrate the theme of Shifting Perspectives in the Global Village.

The annual iWeek is a growing UNC Wilmington tradition, celebrating a variety of cultures while opening a dialogue on campus about the importance of diversity in our community.

"For people who are unable to travel or study abroad, or who want to continue to learn even more about other cultures, these events provide an opportunity for cultural immersion and interaction," said Jennifer Fernandez-Villa, UNCW's international student services director. The Lady Seahawks earned a crucial victory last night at Trask Coliseum, gaining sole possession of first place in the CAA! The Seahawks defeated the VCU Rams 68-64 in an overtime thriller in which the Seahawks did not lead once during regulation play. Congratulations to the Women's Basketball Team for a fantastic win!

Schedule Changes

There have been many phone calls and emails to the Admissions office lately regarding how UNCW looks at changes in senior year schedules, and how it could affect your admission. We would like to take some time now to address our official policy regarding this matter.

Because admission to UNCW is so competitive, an applicant’s program, both current and planned, plays a significant role in an admission decision. We strongly urge you not to change your schedule. However, if your class schedule will change prior to receiving an admission decision, you and your guidance counselor must notify us in writing immediately. If you have received an admission decision from us and wish to make changes to your schedule, we reserve the right to reevaluate your application and issue a new decision. As you might guess, it would be grossly unfair to applicants denied admission based on a weaker schedule, to allow those already admitted to make changes. If you would like to change your schedule and have already received an admission decision, please call our office to speak with a counselor regarding the change. Please keep in mind, however, that the response is always "no" unless you plan on replacing a course with one that is greater in rigor (and AP or IB, for example).

As well, students should submit mid-year grades as soon as they become available. Whether you were deferred from Early Action or just now applying for the first time as a Regular Decision applicant, these grades can help us better evaluate you when making an admission decision.

Temple Grandin lecture sells out

The lecture to be given by Dr. Temple Grandin at UNCW on February 14th, 2011 has just sold out. Tickets are still available for overflow seating at the movie theatre on campus, Lumina Theatre.

Dr. Grandin, a world-renowned author and animal scientist, is an advocate in increasing the public's understanding of autism and animal behavior. Having been diagnosed with autism herself as a child, she draws on her experiences to help design humane livestock facilities and educate the public about this mental illness.

The lecture is entitled "Thinking in Pictures: And Other Reports from My Life with Autism," and will take place at 7pm in the Kenan Auditorium that night. UNCW Trustees approve 2011-12 tuition rates

The UNC Wilmington Board of Trustees met yesterday and approved an increase in tuition and fees for the 2011-2012 academic year. The Board took advantage of the UNC Board of Governor's 6.5 percent "cap" on tuition, and when combined with an already established 2.46 percent increase in fees and other changes, it is projected that total student costs will increase by 3.8 percent next year.

The increases were approved in attempts to combat a dire economic situation in the state of North Carolina, following Governor Bev Purdue's announcement of state budget reductions earlier this year. The rise in tuition and fees was stated by Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo as a way "to move forward during these challenging economic times and provide our students with the most powerful learning experience possible."

The added $3.8 million in revenue will allow UNCW to maintain 21 faculty positions and offer 128 additional course sections, as well as aid areas critical to the student experience such as the the Library, Technology Support, and Financial Aid.

The UNCW Office of Admissions has been busy reading Early Action applications and making decisions. Some students have begun to receive decisions but we have many more to review and send out. Please keep in mind that as long as your application is complete and ready for review, you will receive your admissions decision on or around January 20th by US Mail. Please log onto your SeaLevel account to check the status of your application.

If you have received a letter admit to UNCW, congratulations! You should have received a Teal Ticket in your admission packet that will help outline the steps you should be taking next. You might also find the Admitted? What Next? website helpful.

If you have received a letter of deferral from UNCW, we have given you an opportunity to have the admissions committee reevaluate your application. We will be considering any new test scores or transcript updates that you send in. We will mail a final decision notification letter no later than April 1, 2011. We encourage you to refer to the Frequently Asked Questions sheet that was enclosed in your letter from UNCW.

If you have received a letter of rejection from UNCW, unfortunately your application did not quite meet all of the criteria the admissions committee set forth for the entering class of 2011. Students do not have the ability to reapply in the Regular Decision round, but if UNCW remains one of your top choices we encourage you to explore the transfer process a year from now after you have gained educational experience at another institution. Seniors: Scholarships & Financial Aid

Whether or not you have received an admissions decision from UNCW, now is the time to begin applying for all types of scholarhips. The main UNCW Scholarship Application is up and running!

The application will stay open until April 1, 2011. Scholarships may be awarded on a first come, first serve basis so be sure to apply early. This application is for approximately 75 scholarships awarded from the Offices of Undergraduate Admissions as well as Scholarships and Financial Aid. Some scholarships are renewable and may not be available until the current recipient graduates or no longer meets the criteria for the scholarship. These scholarships are very competitive. We receive over 700 applications a year for approximately 75 scholarships awarded.

If you are interested in scholarships that require financial need, you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA needs to be completed by March 1, 2011 and demonstrate financial need for consideration for the need-based scholarships.

All applicants will be notified whether or not they have been selected. An e-mail will be sent to the e-mail listed on the scholarship application. Notifications will be sent out no later than April 25, 2011.

UNCW Chancellor Search Committee updates

The UNCW Chancellor Search Committee held several public forums yesterday. The forums were established in order to gain valuable public insight into the search for a successor to Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, who recently announced she will retire June 30, 2011. Parker Executive Search firm, named as the committee's valuable partner in the search for the new chancellor, was in attendance as well. Both parties agreed early on that public ideas on the qualities our new chancellor should possess is critical information in identifying potential candidates. Five open forums were held throughout the day yesterday; one for UNCW students, one for UNCW faculty and staff, and three for the local Cape Fear region.

The Search Committee also launched an extensive website detailing information on its members and the Parker Executive Search firm. It will also provide updates throughout the year, and contains an area for input and feedback as well as a great institutional profile of UNCW itself!

WagsGiving... A UNCW Tradition

Even though the temperatures at UNCW are still reaching 60 degrees everyday this week, students are gearing up for their upcoming holiday break. In order to make it to the Thanksgiving Holiday UNCW students must survive another round of exams, finish up the last of their papers... but it is all worth it when they hear that the dinner menu after a long day of school work is the highly anticipated WagsGiving! WagsGiving is a UNCW tradition where the UNCW campus dining services treat the students to a feast full of all of their favorites: turkey, sweet potato pie, macaroni & cheese and too many side dishes to fit on one plate.

Academic Highlights: The Film Studies Department

Wilmington, NC is the third-largest film production center in the United States, which is home to EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest film studio outside of Hollywood. The Film Studies Department is a vital link between UNCW and the local professional film community. The department draws upon film professionals to teach courses in various aspects of film production. As part of the department’s Moviemakers Series, local and visiting filmmakers also make presentations and lead workshops on various aspects of independent and industry film production. The department fosters ties to the local film community through internships that provide students with opportunities to learn about film making by working on film productions and in various film-related enterprises.

Academic Highlights: Watson School of Education

The Watson School of Education offers 42 educator preparation programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as programs for teacher licensure. UNCW's Watson School has been rated "exemplary" by the State Board of Education. Only seven out of 47 North Carolina teacher education programs received this honor. Our passing rate on the Praxis II Special Area Tests required for licensure is 98 percent. In 2006, the Watson School received the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, which honors leadership and innovation in teacher education.

The Early Action Deadline for UNCW is November 1 and those October standardized test scores typically arrive in mid November. When completing your application please list that you have taken or will take a test in October and we will be sure to wait for those scores when reviewing your application.

Forbes Ranks UNCW!

UNCW has been included in Forbe's prestigious publication "America's Best Colleges" 2011 Edition! The publication reviews schools all across the country through a wide variety of criteria. Most importantly, however, is the fact that one of the main criteria institutions are evaluated on is the power of the student experience, and Forbe's obtains this information from the students of the schools themselves. Thank you so much to our students, who enjoy this wonderful community so much and so adamantly believe in the unique experience we provide, because without you we would have never received such an esteemed accolade!

Only 9% of all the 6,600 institutions in the country pass evaluation by Forbes before even being considered for review into this publication. Within that 9%, or only 610 schools, UNCW ranks 311! UNCW students and professors team up to study the N.C Coast!

A team of students and professors, including Dr. Lawerence Cahoon and Dr. Thomas E. Lankford from the Department of Biology and Marine Biology, have received $6,000 from the N.C Sea Grant to study six beaches along the North Carolina coastline!

The research, requested by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, will be used to provide data on our coastal environment under normal, natural conditions, as a basis for future comparison if oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, or from anywhere else, were ever to reach our shores.

Hello Seahawk Nation,

My name is Tom Tascone, and I am the new Freshman Admissions Coordinator for the Office of Admissions! I just wanted to take some time to introduce myself to you all this morning, and let you know how excited I am to be a part of this wonderful community!

I was born and raised in the great state of New York, in a busy little town called Massapequa Park. From an early age I developed a great interest in all things Marine Biology, and upon high school graduation I was ready to move down to North Carolina and begin my undergraduate education at UNCW!

The world was my oyster, and while I did receive my Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, I fell in love with the great campus atmosphere UNCW had to offer and, through my campus involvement, developed an equally passionate interest in higher education and student affairs. And, as they say, the rest is history!

My passions are helping others, making a difference, and overall, leaving every place I encounter in life better than I found it, and so I welcome all of you to contact me at any time, for anything admissions related as well as anything else you may need. I am assigned regionally to the high schools in the western part of North Carolina, but I hold an open-door policy to anyone willing to knock! I'll look forward to hearing from you!

UNCW iTour provides easy access to information resources at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Attention New Seahawks: Final Grades Due!

It is necessary that UNCW receives a copy of your final high school transcript showing all senior grades. The transcript must verify the actual graduation date, not the expected graduation date. UNCW also requires official sealed documentation of any advanced credit you may be eligible for. This includes: community college or university-level coursework completed while in high school, AP credit, and IB credit.

UNCW Office of Admissions Summer Hours & Tours

UNCW is currently operating on our summer hour schedule and the university will be open Monday-Thursday from 7:30am-5pm and Friday from 7:30am-11:30am. These hours run from May 10, 2010 thru August 6, 2010.

Tours are offered when classes are in session; tours are not offered on holidays and when classes are not in session (student breaks, intersessions in Summer School, etc.). If a date is not available, you will not be able to select it when signing up via SeaLevel. Tours are offered Monday & Wednesday at 10am & 2pm, Tuesday & Thursday at 11am & 2pm, and Fridays at 10am. Campus tours will last approximately two hours. Your tour will begin with a 20-30 minute information session with an admission counselor, which serves as a brief overview and introduction to the university and an in-depth look at the admission process and requirements. A walking tour of campus will begin immediately after this information session and cover all academic and student life aspects of campus.

To register for a campus tour, login to your SeaLevel account and click on "Visit UNCW" on the navigation area on the left of your homepage. Then choose "Schedule a Tour" from the drop-down menu. Finally, select the date you will be joining us for your campus tour and input the required information. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail on file with your SeaLevel account confirming your visit.

UNC Wilmington Ultimate Club Teams Compete in National College Championships May 28-31

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Ultimate Frisbee men's and women's clubs competed for a national title at the 2010 USA Ultimate College Championships May 28-31 in Madison, Wis. USA Ultimate is the national governing body for the sport of Ultimate in the United States.

More than 200 women's teams compete in the Ultimate leagues. UNCW has had a Club Ultimate team since 1988. The UNCW women's team, the Seaweed, went into the tournament play ranked sixth in the nation. They defeated UNC Chapel Hill's team at the Atlantic Coast College Open Regionals May 8-9 to advance to nationals. The win marks the second time in two years that the women's team has won the regional tournament on its way to national competition. The men's team, the Seamen, finished second in regional competition behind the University of Florida. As the runner-up, they went on to compete in Wisconsin.

Both the men's and women's teams have track records of tournament success. The UNCW women were Atlantic Coast Regional Champs and N.C. Sectional Champs in 2010. The men's team is ranked 19th in the nation and was the N.C. Sectional Champ in 2009 and Atlantic Coast Regional Runner-Up in 2010.

New UNCW Alumni

The 79th commencement exercises for UNCW took place on May 7-8 in Trask Coliseum. An estimated 1,695 undergraduate and 265 graduate students received degrees and joined the already 53,000 proud Seahawk Alumni.

New UNCW graduates have taken advantage of the UNCW Career Services Office while preparing for internships, writing resumes, searching for jobs, and interviewing with potential employers. The Career Services Office is a comprehensive career counseling and resource center dedicated to empowering students and alumni as active participants in their own career development. Through career exploration and experiential opportunities, students are motivated to expand their knowledge of themselves and the world of work in a dynamic global community.

Our newest UNCW alumni report that after graduation 80% have either entered a graduate program or found employment within five months. We encourage you to read about some of these students who have been highlighted for their accomplishments upon graduation.

UNCW Clock Tower History

Ten years ago, current Assistant Director of UNCW Presents and part-time faculty member Shane Fernando, as class president, led the campaign to raise funds for a 50-foot clock tower for the center of campus. Students, alumni, staff, faculty, the university and community members and businesses contributed to make this monumental task a reality; it remains the largest student organized gift project in the UNC-system.

The UNCW Millennium Clock Tower was dedicated and sounded for the first time at the senior celebration on May 12, 2000. The university's alma mater plays on the carillon each day at noon and 5 p.m. and the Westminster chimes toll on the hour. Today, the clock tower is a significant part of important institutional events such as the annual Trask Trek during freshman convocation and memorial programs of all sorts.

Are you an accepted student still looking for the perfect place to live next year at UNCW? Take a look at the UNCW Housing and Residence Life Website. There are floor plans and pictures of all of the residence hall that are currently available for incoming freshmen.

Today, there are 45 residential buildings that include traditional residence halls, residence suites, and apartments. Collectively, these buildings house over 4,100 students representing nearly 40% of the undergraduate population. Although UNCW does not require any students to live on campus, almost 95% of UNCW freshmen choose to stay on campus their first year.

AP Credit by Examination

An entering freshman may receive semester hour credits based on Advanced Placement Examination. These examinations are taken prior to the student's high school graduation. Information on this examination program may be obtained from the high school counselor. High school students who take Advanced Placement Examinations should have test scores sent to the University of North Carolina Wilmington Registrar's Office for placement and credit evaluation. Please head to the UNCW Registrar's website for more information on what scores correlate to the UNCW class.

UNCW Summer School

For students willing to dive in intellectually, the University of North Carolina offers a perfect environment for learning and living, one that is dynamic, demanding and engaging.

Some advantages which Summer Sessions provide are: the ability to complete a full semester of coursework in a shorter span of time; the opportunity to reduce course load in the upcoming semesters; and a jump start for new students to obtaining a degree. Students may earn a maximum of eight semester hours of credit per summer session!

Summer Session 2: June 23-July 23, 2010

UNCW Scientists take rare right whale photographs

On March 20, 2010, a right whale was observed giving birth off Jacksonville, Florida during aerial surveys conducted jointly by UNC Wilmington and Duke University. The aerial survey team observed a large, single right whale for 27 minutes prior to the appearance of the new born calf. The calf appeared at the surface after the adult had remained submerged, out of view, for several minutes. The team continued observations for approximately 19 minutes before leaving the site and returning to land.

Each year UNCW becomes increasingly selective, and we are unable to enroll all the talented students we want for the fall semester. During the application process, we identify students who meet most of the criteria in UNCW's academic profile and who possess the leadership skills and academic preparation that will make them successful at UNCW's rigorous academic environment. For this reason, we make an official offer of admission to the university as a First-Year Spring Admit (FYSA).

The FYSA group will receive academic advising over the summer should the student choose to enroll in a community college during the fall semester. Admissions Decisions

After reading more than 10,000 applications from students all over North Carolina, the United States and a variety of Countries... admissions decision are on their way out! The posted notification date for UNCW's Regular Decision Deadline is April 1, 2010 so students should be hearing back if they haven't already. If you received a Defer decision in the Early Action round, your final admissions decision will be included in this group of admissions decisions as well.

Class Registration Advice

Many of the high school sophomores and juniors are preparing or are in the midst of signing up for their next years course load. As you plan your schedule, the UNCW Admissions Office would like to offer a few words of advice...

Take a more academically challenging course load then you did the year before. UNCW wants to see that the rigor in your schedule is increasing as you move through high school.
When you are considering an AP or an Honors course, chose to take them in the subjects that you know you will be successful in. It is not the quantity of AP but rather the quality that you produce that we are interested in. If you enjoy and do well in an English and History class, consider an AP in those. If you know that Math is not your strongest subject, do not try struggle through an AP all year long, maybe an Honors is where you are best suited.
Begin to take SAT and ACT (with writing) tests now. Before you get into your senior year is when you have the most time to take practice tests and perfect your skills. UNCW suggests that you use the score choice option when available for standardized tests. This will allow all of your scores to come to you first for review before any college or university sees them. Feel free to call UNCW for advice on which test score is best and/or how you should proceeded.

A Snowy UNCW

This past weekend UNCW and the surrounding Wilmington area saw anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow. Typicaly winter weather keeps UNCW students walking to class comfortably in 40 degree temperatures, but for two days they got to play in the snow!

Mid-Atlantic/New England Adverse Weather Update

UNCW is well aware of the adverse weather conditions that have been impacting the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions of the country.

While the Regular Decision deadline was February 1, 2010, we are aware that receipt of many of your credentials may have been slowed due to the snowstorms. Be assured that UNCW will not penalize you in any way due to these circumstances, and our office will not make a decision on an application until it is complete and ready for review.

Please make every effort to submit all of your supporting documentation and credentials as soon as possible.

SAT & ACT Test Information

For those students that have either been Deferred Admission or are currently applying for admission through the Regular Decision round please take the following testing information into account:

The March SAT will be the last SAT that will be considered for all students. If you are taking the March SAT please let our office know your intentions as your scores will arrive to our office around the beginning of April. April 1 is the final notification date and these test scores could delay your admissions decision. Once again, if you plan on taking the March SAT, please inform our office as soon as possible.
The February ACT with Writing will be the last ACT test that the UNCW Office of Admissions will be able to consider. The April ACT should only be considered if your are currently a high school junior; these scores will NOT arrive in our office in time to be considered for the Fall 2010 application year.
Please check your SeaLevel account to see what test scores UNCW has on your application. If you have taken a standardized test and it is not listed on your SeaLevel account, we do not have it. You will need to contact College Board or ACT to have these scores sent in if you wish for them to be considered.

Regular Decision Deadline

The Regular Decision deadline is almost here!
Students wishing to be considered for admissions for the Fall 2010 must have their application submitted by February 1, 2010!

As long as your actual application with essay and application fee is submitted online, or postmarked before or on February 1, you will be considered for the Regular Decision deadline. All other materials (your transcripts, test scores, and letter of recommendation or counselor statement) may arrive after the deadline. Please remember that your application will not be complete and therefore we will be unable to review it until these materials arrive, so it is helpful if you send them in as soon as possible.

Senior Schedule Changes

As students move deeper into their senior year and they begin to receive admissions decision back from UNCW we often receive phone calls from both the high schools and the students regarding schedule changes. UNCW would like to deliver a consistent message before your second semester begins about senior schedule changes.

We wish that we could tell you that it doesn’t matter to UNCW when a student drops a class scheduled for spring, but unfortunately, it does. Because the competition for admission is so fierce, an applicant’s program, both current and planned, plays a significant role in an admission decision. Our response to students and guidance counselors asking to drop a course is always “no” unless the student plans on replacing the course with one that is greater in rigor (an AP or IB, for example). As you might guess, it would be grossly unfair to applicants denied admission based on a weaker schedule, to allow those already admitted to make changes.

We hope this rationale makes sense as you enter into your spring semester. Please feel free to contact our office should you have any questions.

Early Action Decisions

The UNCW Office of Admissions has been busy reading Early Action applications and making decisions. Some students have begun to receive admissions but we have many more to continue to send out. Please keep in mind that if you have not received your admissions decision, and your application is complete and ready for review, you will receive your admissions decision on or around January 20th by US Mail. Please log onto your SeaLevel account to check the status of your application.

If you have received a letter admit to UNCW, congratulations! You should have received a Teal Ticket in your admission packet that will help outline the steps you should be taking next. You might also find the Admitted Student? What Next? website helpful.

If you have received a letter of deferral from UNCW, we have given you an opportunity to have the admissions committee reevaluate your application. We will be considering any new test scores or transcript updates that you send in. We will mail a final decision notification letter no later than April 1, 2010. We encourage you to refer to the Frequently Asked Questions sheet that was enclosed in your letter from UNCW.

If you have received a letter of rejection from UNCW, unfortunately your application did not quite meet all of the criteria the admissions committee set forth for the entering class of 2010. Once an admissions decision has been made, it is final and students do not have the ability to reapply in the Regular Decision round. If you still find UNCW as one of your top choices we encourage you to explore the transfer process a year from now after you have gained educational experience at another institution. REMEMBER the Early Action deadline is fast approaching on November 1; your application must be SUBMITTED before or on November 1 to be considered for the Early Action Round.

As long as your actual application with essay and application fee is submitted online, or postmarked before or on November 1, you will be considered for the Early Action deadline. All other materials (your transcripts, test scores, and letter of recommendation or counselor statement) may arrive after the deadline. Please remember that your application will not be complete and therefore we will be unable to review it until these materials arrive, so it is helpful if you send them in as soon as possible.
It may take a few weeks for us to process items that you submit, and we ask that you please have patience and allow us plenty of time to process your materials that we receive by mail. As we mentioned above, these items do not need to be submitted by November 1, so there is no need to worry.
Materials such as recommendation letters and transcripts that you mail in before you submit your application will not show up on your SeaLevel account until after you submit your application. These items are not matched up with your application until after it has been submitted.
